►► About Gaia
Gaia GPS is the ultimate app for backcountry, off-grid, and off-trail adventures. Painstakingly crafted since 2009, Gaia offers the full functionality of a handheld, backcountry GPS unit, with the best outdoor maps on the App Store.
Today, five hikers contribute to the support and development of Gaia GPS. You can always get in touch with us at support@gaiagps.com.
Gaia (guy-yuh) comes from Greek mythology - she is the Goddess of the Earth, or Mother Nature.
• Download unlimited maps of the world, for times when you don't have an internet connection.
• Use Gaia on all of your iPhones/iPads/iPods.
• View topographic, satellite imagery, and road maps. (USGS Topos, USGS Aerials, USFS, OpenStreetMap, and many other user-suggested map sources of remote places).
• Display NEXRAD radar, track data, and TrailBehind waypoints on the map.
• Record tracks, waypoints, and take geo-tagged photos.
* use GaiaCloud to back up your waypoints and trails, and sync data between devices
• Search for nearby waypoints and reports about places.
• Import and export GPX/KML files, by iTunes, Safari, email and EveryTrail.com.
• Customize all aspects of Gaia, including units, coordinates types, color and sound, and more.
►► IMPORTANT - IPOD TOUCH AND WIFI ONLY IPADS - This application will not be fully functional on these devices, unless you have an external GPS attachment. The GPS Recorder and compass will be inactive. You will be able to view maps and waypoints, but you cannot record tracks.
►► GPS WARNING - Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.

It seems like the user (Johnnyrrtb) who left the bad review probably has Gaia in "offline mode," and that's why he can't see any maps, except one source. Unfortunately, his support request was not answerable because it was sent anonymously.
The only map that works with Gaia GPS now is the ESRI Topo map. None of the other maps work. Not Google imagery, Google elevation, Cal Topo, Mapquest, ESRI imagery, etc. What happened? The in app purchase Gaia Green does not work. This is very disappointing. This had been the best hiking app by far.
Love the multiple (downloadable) map overlays and the auto color coding of multiple segment tracks. You can fool around with the dozens of others (I did) or save the time and trouble and get this to start with.
Perfect if you know where youre going ahead of time. Would like a whole united states download for when unplanned trips happen and there is no place to download ahead of time.
Works great! Must have for all my backpacking. The only addition I would recommend is a tool to measure between points (see Backpacker Map Maker Pro).
I use it often, but it is not a reliable as Garmin standalone GPS unit. It crashes, locks up, etc. The interface is ergonomic and user-friendly.
Very nice app.
Easy to use. Track a run or use it to find your way back to your hotel when traveling. Especially useful when out of range of cell phone service.
The $20 was my only hesitation. However, it's really nice to be able to download maps for offline use.
Also my most expensive by far, but it's amazing: i haven't bought a topo map in a year, i download everything prior to my trips and then hike using the maps offline, it has everything and more.. Which allowed me to discover hikes nowone knows about. Used it for almost a year, and everyday in the last couple months as im doing a hikibg-biking trip across the Rockies. Thanks to the developpers!
Blew me away! My handheld GPS broke so I thought I'd give this a try before spending another couple of hundred bucks on another one. This app performed better, yes, better than my GPS and is much simpler. Don't pay much attention to some of the bad reviews, because I suspect they didn't lock in there map. This performed perfectly where I had no cell service and marked out track well. Also, i used it to know my speed when the speedometer broke on my car. Try it, you'll love it for $10. It's worth more than 10 times the cost.
I have tested many different kinds of GPS apps. This one seems to be the most reliable and also has the most features. Highly recommended.
Great app, like that they added syncing between decides. Would be amazing if they could and routable trail maps.
This really is a great app. I still use a dedicated GPSR to attach to my motorcycle for offroad, but for everything else including path planning, this is the best.
So much better than a garmin! This app just keeps getting better!!
I'm a helicopter pilot in the California Seirra Nevada and this app was an excellent find for me. Between the different layers I can find forestry roads and other landmark features that simply don't exist on different maps. Well worth every penny.
This app is the best one out there for backpacking! I've tried many of the other ones out there and nothing stacks up to this program. My only caveat is that it would be nice if they would link with FaceBook so you can share your trips with friends! The Every Trail website is horrible and very inconvinient for sharing. Please! Link to FaceBook!!
I use this app for backpacking trips. It is very intuitive. I especially like the features for saving battery life. I was originally skeptical that an iPhone app could replace a paper topo map, particularly with my poor eyesight. However the app turned out to be better than a topo, despite the limit of screen size. You can't zoom a paper topo map, and you can't superimpose a Google satellite image on a topo map on paper like you can in Gaia.
There are other apps on my phone I use more frequently than Gaia, but there is not one that I hold in higher esteem. It does everything I ask of it (and more), and every release only enhances my appreciation for it. While it doesn't yet do every trivial task I might desire, it does everything I truly need. And every time I've had a problem or question, the developers have taken the time to address the matter (whether to resolve the issue or to explain why it cannot presently be resolved). The app and its developers are golden. I look forward to using Gaia (and Gaia Green) for years to come.
Been awesome. Able to import all kind of things including large GFX files. So cool.
Used this program both off and online as a compliment to my topo maps. Pros: easy to use Easy to switch between menus Map save and waypoint functions easy to access Cons: old base layer files that don't show many trails/roads
Worth it.
Awesome app. Maps for both US and international. Great selection to pick from to best suit your needs. Easy to download maps onto your phone for when you don't have cell access. Ability to select the best resolution for your needs. Easy to use interface. Better than any other mapping/GPS combo that I have used. Puts Garmin to shame
I looked at a bunch of apps for doing backcountry trips and waypoint navigation. Nothing comes close to Gaia!
Perfect
Slick, clean, intuitive interface. Full compatibility with GPX/KMZ. Custom map layers, offline maps. I could feature dump to ya all day. Suffice it to say I used to cycle among 4 topo map apps, and now I just use Gaia. Another unique thing worth noting--the developers actually respond to feedback/questions! It's a breath of fresh air.
Good but sometimes combines tracks and loses others.
The best trail GPS available. This makes my $500 Garmin 62 look like a joke...
i use it every day and have logged hundreds of hiking miles using.
But downloaded Street Maps are only useful in ports. Where are the topo maps for Alaska???
Very easy to use with many features!
The tracker is awesome!! Out in the middle of nowhere and it kept excellent track of my points of interest, this app is great!!! Still learning all the potential of this app, & I still give it a 5 star!
Just took a trip out into the deep forest and everything worked amazing love it!!! This saved me from buying an $800 handheld GPS thanks soooo much!!
Best gps ever!
Completed a 900-mile California Mission walk of all 21 missions and I couldn't have done it without Gaia. Mine was the first electronically recorded track of this walk and I've been able to export it to numerous other hikers. The app is easy to use and meets all of my "GPS" needs! I rate it 5 stars without reservation.
I am torn between giving 4 and giving 5 stars. This is definitely the best hiking/gps app I have used, but there are things that could be improved. I think the price went way up since I bought it, so I'll give it the 4. I used to run several hiking/gps apps at a time, because one would give me a graph of my elevations, and a different one would let me mark waypoints & include photos, but this one does it all, and for the most part, the interface is straightforward, and is certainly more clear than almost all the other hiking/gps apps. You can slide most of the buttons out of the way, too, so you get a good view of the map. It is easy to download detailed topo or other map layers before your hike, when you have a good internet connection, and there are lots of options for which maps to use. Your tracks can be backed up online, which is real nice. I haven't explored the options for exporting tracks yet. One thing I really like is that I can display the track and waypoints from a previous trip while I am recording a new trip. I was delighted recently when I thought, "I recognize this spot," so I opened up Gaia GPS, and tapped a marker, to find a labeled photo of the very place I was standing. Another nice feature is the newly added "Crop" button. If you forget to turn off the app at the end of your hike, so that you have accidentally recorded your drive home, you can crop the unwanted driving off of the track for your trip. At the developers website, I saw a notice that there is now a way to add map layers of paper maps you have digitized (like local park maps that show the actual hiking trails) and then "stretch" or "warp" them to fit the actual gps. I have not tried this, but i really hope it works I do have a few irritations with the app: *The button for starting and ending a track is a bit ambiguous. * When I got a new phone, I suddenly had two of every trip I had recorded, one with the track, waypoints & photos, and one with the track, but none or only some of my waypoints & photos. When I deleted the duplicates that were missing waypoints & photos, the other copy seemed fine, but when I reopened the app a day later, I found that many of the trips had lost their recorded track, leaving me ONLY the waypoints & photos! Argh!! They are still on the Gaia Cloud site, but I can't figure out how to get them back into my phone. * On the Gaia Cloud website, sorting trips by date actually sorts the months alphabetically rather than chronologically, which is pretty ridiculous. * A recent hike had a gap in its track, and I have no idea why the app was not recording during that gap. And there are a few things that could be improved: * Other hiking/gps apps let you give your photos a title right when you take them, but Gaia GPS does not, which leaves you with dozens of photos called "My Photo". * I would like immediate feedback about whether I have stopped or started recording a track. * For some reason, in the statistics for my hikes, the app reports that my top speed was 7 or 8 miles an hour. No, I was walking the whole time, and I didn't tumble down a hill, so I can't figure out where those numbers came from. That said, the developer actively seeks requests for improvements on the website, and is real quick to answer questions. There are lots of tutorial videos and a detailed manual you can access from within the app or at the website, even though most features are not difficult to figure out.
Very useful for tracking and planning. Love the versatility of the many database overlays that project to the same scale. Seeing one's GPS location marked on a USGS quad is very cool. Would give it six stars of possible.
Great app. Better than any of the five others I have tested.
Easy to use, very impressive, great app to take advantage of the GPS capability in your phone.
Love the app and have used it on multiple hikes. Bring lots of backup power.
I have have found this app to be very useful out on the trails. The features of mapping, setting waypoints, etc are easy to set and use and I appreciate the data displayed at the end of the hike. It has become my go-to app for tracking my hikes. The developer is very responsive to suggestions for improvement, making the app ever more useful.
Having a great time!
Great app for hunting, save all your favorite spots and make trails to help find them again in the dark. The only issue is not being able to put the iPhone into GPS only mode, the best you can do is turn off cell network and wifi then toggle your airplane mode on/ off to save battery.
No problems in areas where there is no cell coverage. All the maps you will ever need and the pin drops are accurate. I recommend this app to any outdoor enthusiast.
This app is the easiest to use of 4 that I have tried. Easy to download maps and upload tracks. Simple, clear interface. Great app and gets better all the time.
With Gaia green this is my go to app for trail navigation!
This is an incredible, full featured GPS app. The interface is clear and the usability superior to anything I've seen. Simply excellent.
After downloading theophilte, a great app to have
New user here. I was able to use on my first hike into the Rincon Mtns in S. AZ without much trouble. Great customer service and I like the way they solicit input for new features.
Awesome customer support! Need to get a few more features: such as distance and elevation states when making a route plan.
